AOL servers (not the same thing as AIM servers) were all highly confidential and custom work done just inside AOL, if I understand correctly. I think I once read an article by some AOL staff, that described the process they went through when shutting down the servers and purging the old data. I don't know that any copies of the server software still exist.

However.

Given that umpteen bazillion copies of various versions of the AOL client software are available, I guess technic'ly a sufficiently motivated person could reverse-engineer how they attempt to talk to the server and what responses they expect.

For me, the saddest part is all the lost content: forum posts, file archives, themed areas, HOSTS (I'm still in touch with one of them, who's been running a chat server using IRC for years).

I dunno, man. _(-_-)_/
Maybe I'm just feeling down because I can't get AIM 4.7 on MacOS 9 to connect.
