It may be the case that Pidgin and libpurple modules can negotiate SSL in ways that Official clients can't.

Ok, so you are correct, packets are written tho in a standard of some sort, ala Javascript and ecma standards.
Which also applies to html.
':html5 header here

'optionally footer tags also in body
And a packet can and has a similar standards.
Or now could call structure.
Body holds data etc.
It is usually in a low level language also:assembly or inline c++

You are talking about Standard Protocols. IRC and XMPP and SILC are Open Source Chat/Instant message. Protocols. They aren't commercial. They are also still around today.

AIM (OSCAR) is not a Standard Protocol.
YIM is not a Standard Protocol.

Like Skype and Discord, AIM is Proprietary. There was one Official AIM Client created for Linux. It died a Quick death, never worked right to begin with. If you ran Linux, you used something like Pidgin, which was at one point called Gaim.

The whole point of AIM was to Silo users using their software to where if you want to connect with people, you have to use their software, and click ads to "pay" for the service.

Pidgin users like me were considered "freeloaders". AIM was never really free. AIM was never open, it was reverse engineered by multiple parties and thats why Phoenix is here today.
