Just signed up - I use Debian 9 on a netbook, and may run AIM in WINE.

Not that I know of. Pretty sure it's just for the nostalgia. I could be wrong, though. Ask around.

Really it just counts on how the person wants to do it and what version you're using.
a lot of people use windows xp or 98 vms just for the feel, since it just brings you right back to the "good old days"
but then some people run it normally on windows, which is usually fine. just some versions don't work well on windows 10 since of some explorer thing causing the system to freeze up trying to run aim. so it really just depends on how they wanna do it and if they can do it.

lol
