Chat button greyed out?

Hi,
I'm trying to create a buddy chat in Mac OS 9, but for some reason the chat button is greyed out. I've tried using the AIM Guide to no avail. How do I fix this?

the Mac version of the client probably wouldn't work with the current chat services revision anyway, there's something different in the protocol in versions of the client prior to 4.8 that aren't documented so I haven't been able to figure out what is happening yet.

Well, I actually got it working after downloading a modified client from the Macintosh Repository, but now I keep getting this error:

"Sorry, you cannot chat because information required to create the chat room has not been received. Please try again in a few minutes."
