I came across this which is still hosted on the AIM.com website: http://x.aim.com/laim/faq.php.

I'm able to run it from a portable drive, but it doesn't seem to have any way to enter setup and change the server address. I tried poking around the files in the install directory to see if there an editable .js , .box , .dll file to change the server address, but came up with nothing. Might be interesting to see if anyone can come up with anything

Got it to login. You have to enter username and password first, then to the left of the close button click settings and uncheck "Login with SSL" and "Use advanced server" Click the "Connection" tab and enter "iwarg.ddns.net" under host and change the host to 5190. click close and click "Sign In"

this must have been developed around the same time as AIM 6.. no idea why the buddy list wouldn't work though seeing as it doesn't seem to be sending any unexpected commands.. it does at least seem to be pulling down and parsing the user list.

I did notice that this seems to implement "friendly names" so maybe that has something to do with it..
