Something interesting about AOL Desktop

when probing around the AOL Desktop software, I notice deep in the connection settings that it uses port 5190 just like the AIM client. Of course, the AOL desktop client won't connect to Phoenix AIM, I tried that already by setting Phoenix AIM's server as the host. But maybe with some tweaking on the server end, AOL desktop might have no trouble connecting. At the moment, it'll get up to the verifying username/password part then it disconnects with a strange error. Unfortunately, I can't try it with my account registered on the Phoenix AIM server, because the AOL desktop clients won't allow people to type a username in until after the client can make contact with the server first...

Well i should say that aol 4.0 did but maybe it will work if the server will be conpatable for that but someone out there to do a trick on the sever so it can connect to the welcome screen without any problems

I have technical writeups of the FDO protocol and white papers from AOL developers, if I really wanted to I could just as easily as developing OSCAR server, however the overhead of FDO and the entire AOL desktop system is much greater than simply hosting AIM / OSCAR traffic, and it's much more involved. plus I don't have the tools used to develop FDO objects or any of the FDO binaries that were served via AOL desktop so it would be a long and tiresome process to re-develop all those.

Yes I agree with you iwarg It is possable to do FDO but you need to make it work by doing protocol and all that sorts of stuff and that's where we can host the aol server as an FDO But I don't know how that would work but let's see and find out .

I've wished that I had the ability to do something like that. I'd love to get the old AOL client up and running again. I'd probably start with 3.0 since that is what I first got online with.
