lol, that might be a good while... AIM 6 changed a lot of things about the connection handshaking and user authentication. I do have one piece of the puzzle now at least, SSL layer support for the server.

I have been able to get pidgin to connect with SSL but apparently AIM 7.x and 6.x use a different SSL encryption that isn't supported by default in visual studio 2010.

apparently AOL used some kind of in-house encapsulation algorithm that isn't TLS, so that makes things much more difficult.

not very likely.. it uses some custom AOL developed SSL encryption algorithm apparently. I can't get the server to authenticate the SSL handshake.

AOL Client 2.5 would be the easiest to reverse engineer. There was an article posted a long, long time ago about the early TOC protocol. By manipulating the packets, he made a module that could bypass the AOL Client entirely.

You could sign on to the service and send an instant message with a VB6 Form. I still have it, if you want it for your collection.
