Problem joining public groups

I might just be being a big-brained genius, but I'm clicking the links on the "Public Chatrooms" page, choosing to open with AIM, and then... nothing happens. I'm probably doing something wrong, since I've never actually used AIM before, so I'd appreciate any help.

i just checked the public room from my Aim & messegemate,
all seems to be working ok for me.
maybe its the version of aim your using ?
try a different aim version.

I've tried it on both AIM 5.9 and AIM Pro, the only two versions I can get to work on my modern-ass system at the moment. The icon flashes on my taskbar like something's happened, but nothing actually happens.

Hello, Right now I am on my Windows xp desktop but I also have some problems with joining groups, I am using version 4.7 but I am afraid if I upgrade I will lose the awesome ticker. Life is hard...

5.9 Windows 10, can't join public groups either. Also tried 5.0 and 4.7 to no avail.
