Buddy Icon File Compatibility

I have tried 5 file formats for uploading Buddy Icons (BMP, JPG, GIF, TIF and PNG) and none have worked. All 5 have given me the following message: "This file type is not allowed (File Type)". If someone could please tell me the supported file type, that would be great!
