the last versions of a mac client that worked IIRC were early iChat versions for powerpc, and Adium 1.3.10 and older

it may be because it was made within mac os 7-9 and in 10.0 (Cheetah) through 10.4 (Tiger), there was a program called Classic. It let you run old Mac OS 9 programs in Mac OS X. I would here like to quote from David Pouge, he said, "There is a replacement, though. It's called Sheepshaver, but it's hard to download, and it's not exactly rock-solid, but when you have to use that old program, that'll have to do." If you try runbning a OS 9 program, it says "The application cannot be run because the Classic enviroment is not supported."
tl;dr try using a older mac/vm
