Having Trouble Chatting With Adium

I'm using the latest supported version on a PPC iBook G4, and I can connect and have my status displayed as Online, but I can't seem to join group chats or add any buddies. If anyone could help me either get Adium working or provide another client (tried iChat, I assume it's too new to connect properly) that would be great.
