Quirk with logging into Phoenix under MSN 1.0

So I decided to install MSN Messenger 1.0 on one of my testing VMs and see if it would log in on Phoenix's servers with a registry hack, but every time I tried to, it would reply with a generic "server not found" error. Not even with HOSTS modifications would it budge.

I then decided to open up Ethereal on that machine to see what was actually going on. To say the least, I'm not impressed.

After the server sends the handshake packet, MSN decides to use channel 0x01 auth, but it doesn't roast the password alongside, which is both dumbfounding on M$' part and concerning.

(Note that the password in the capture is a dummy password, but even with my real password, I was going nowhere)

I'm not exactly sure if this is something the admin could look into, also considering the unethical nature of cleartext authentication nowadays. But if it is something he can look into and implement, then at least I can finally try out AIM on MSN 1.0. =p
