You just go to Add Buddy (sometimes under something like "Add" and then clicking Buddy) in your client and put their screenname as seen on this site or whatever they give you. If they are online, they'll show up, and you can chat usually by double clicking their screenname.

Well, I typically only chat about computer programming, servers, or the history of AOL/AIM, so if you're looking for general discussion/chat you may just want to check the Always online buddies forum topic, add people from there, and wait for some to come online.

Here's a link to that topic:

What AIM client are you using? Do you know the name/version or can tell where you downloaded it so I can check?

+ Press "Setup" which has an icon of "+ -"
+ In the window that opens press "Add Buddy" and enter the name

You may need to single click a group name first, or even add a group first by:
+ Clicking "Add Group"
+ Call it "Friends"
+ Click "Add Buddy"
